Prepare this special Braised Mushrooms and Abalone for the Chinese New Year or a special…
Our Chinese New Year 2020 celebration ushering in a new 12 year cycle. We greet the Metal Rat with our traditional New Year’s Day Loh Hon Chai breakfast.
This is the second Chinese New Year celebration in this home. The previous one was relative simple as we were still unpacking. This year we were able to prepare ahead with ingredients and decorations. Shortly after removing the Christmas ornaments, up went our red lanterns and angpow wrappers.
CNY Lego Sets
This year Lego came out with some delightful Chinese New Year scenes like the Temple Fair and Lion Dance. These sets are in very limited availability due to extreme popularity. Fortunately, there are still a few sets left at the time of this writing. There are also two Asia exclusive issues from 2019 that are also still available. Chinese New Year Breakfast
As is the tradition in our family, we start off the Chinese New Year with a morning feast of Loh Hon Chai and Ho See Fatt Choy. As far back as I can remember, we always enjoyed this tasty and delicious Braised Mixed Vegetables on the first day of the new year. Grandma prepared this dish for the clan. After Grandma passed, Mom took over the role since Dad is the eldest son.
I usually call Mom and Dad on the eve of the Chinese New Year. With a 15 hour time difference (in the winter), while we are just about to have our New Year’s Eve Reunion Dinner, they are starting their Loh Hon Chai/Chai Choy breakfast. Mom will always ask if I am going to cook Chai Choy and this year was no exception.
Together with Chai Choy, I also prepare my Ah Poh‘s (Grand Aunt) Ho See Fatt Choy (Braised Oysters and Sea Moss) for a dose of good fortune. One can’t have too much good fortune, right? Anyway, this is a very tasty dish and just this morning, my son Jon said that he is acquiring a taste for this dish which made me 🙂 . It truly is a blessing to have both sons home to celebrate the New Year with us.
We also had a wonderful New Year’s Eve dinner and for that you have to hop over to Roti n Rice to see what we enjoyed.
